The Use of Miniatures in Role Playing and Fantasy Games

Miniature figures are required in role playing games which transport the players into a fantasy world. These games are built around a series of skirmishes that take place in a given, most often fantastic, location. The game pits two or more players against each other in a pitched battle or skirmish, with each player in charge of their own army or plucky band of warriors. These armies are composed of miniatures. One of the most popular manufacturers of miniatures is Games Workshop, with their successful 'Warhammer' and 'Warhammer 40k' ranges.

Players fight a battle on a map or game board, and the player who achieves the necessary objectives is the winner. Role playing games are an ever popular market, with sales reaching the millions. This of course has led to a very lucrative and active miniatures market, which produces a number of different characters and factions to be used in role playing games.

One extremely popular use of miniature figures is in the game 'Dungeons and Dragons'. This game can be played as a full version, or using the skirmish rules which were touched on earlier. A skirmish allows players to get their gaming 'fix' without having to become too involved in the world and its many complicated rules. For example, a 'Dungeon Master' is not necessary for a miniature skirmish game, which means that the game can progress at a much faster pace.

Miniature figures themselves are available in collectible packs release by their manufacturer. Often, these are created in a manner which means that collectors can find some random elements, adding to the appeal and excitement of the hobby. Each piece is given a unique level of availability, with some figures being common, others common, and a select few that are classed as 'rare' miniatures. The rarity of a miniature determines its value, both in the game that it is designed for, and the real world. Different sets allow collectors to obtain different miniatures.

Often, sets are released with 60 different miniatures at a time, and in a mix of miniatures that are rare, uncommon and common. By purchasing more miniatures, the collector is not only able to boost their collection, but also have a greater variety of items available for use in the game, increasing their potential strategies.

In some game worlds, such as Dungeons and Dragons, booster packs are available, which offer collectors the opportunity to buy a smaller number of miniatures to add to their collection. These booster packs are generally associated with a particular miniature that has been released, giving collectors the opportunity to know what the likely type of miniature they will find is. This gives collectors a chance to craft an army for the game based on certain characteristics which they prefer more than others, and allows players to personalize the game at will.

Although miniatures are designed for use in their specialized game worlds, there are some who purchase them to modify and adapt for their own games, which are often hybrids of multiple rules. Others purchase the miniatures purely for the purpose of collection and display.

Miniatures are fun to collect in their own right, and they can be painted to your heart’s delight. There are several miniatures of various categories and degrees on websites that don’t have to be purchased in tandem with the game board itself. Therefore, you can start up your own collection of miniatures and maybe invent your own game.
